PRESIDENT
Springfield College was founded in 1885 and graduated its first students in degree programs in 1906.
In its early days it was known as the YMCA International Training School, though it has always been
independent of the YMCA.
Then as now, the College’s mission has been to educate students in “spirit, mind, and body for
leadership in service to others.” The early College was a wellspring of innovation in exercise science,
sport, and human services. In 1891, faculty member James Naismith famously tacked up a peach basket
and invented basketball; alumnus William Morgan invented volleyball; Amos Alonzo Stagg was its first
football coach; faculty member Luther Gulick is known as “the father of physical education.”
Today, Springfield College offers a full array of 40 majors and 15 preprofessional programs on its main
campus in Springfield, Massachusetts (where 3,300 undergraduate and graduate students enroll) and at
eleven regional campus of the College’s School of Human Services (an additional 1800 undergraduate
and graduate students.) Two doctorates are offered, with another pending. Over the past decade, the
College has grown its enrollment, doubled the endowment, invested $100 million in facilities, and
moved into the top tier of USNews’s “Best Universities—North Region.”
The next president will benefit from many gains realized during the presidency of Dr. Richard B. Flynn,
who is retiring after 12 years. The Board of Trustees seeks in a next president a person who can embrace
and build upon the history and mission of this distinctive College and who has a record of success
in executive leadership and fund-raising. The Board looks, too, for excellent communication and
interpersonal skills, habits of teamwork, financial and political acumen, a commitment to diversity, and
an earned doctorate.
The search committee will commence review of applications January 25, 2011. A more detailed
description of Springfield College, the position, and this search, with directions for applying, may be
