Associate Vice Chancellor/Director of
Inclusion and Intercultural Relations

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking nominations and applications
for the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs/Director of Inclusion and
Intercultural Relations. Founded in 1867, the Illinois campus is one of the original 37 public
land-grant institutions. It is one of the top comprehensive research public universities in the
nation. The successful candidate will be working on a campus with academically talented
and diverse student population, including 19 percent international students, 12 percent Asian
American students, 5 percent African American students, and 6 percent Hispanic/Latino
students from a total enrollment over 42,000 students. It is a traditional residential campus
with nearly 10,500 students living in campus housing.
The Associate Vice Chancellor serves as a member of the Vice Chancellor’s leadership team,
with a focus on diversity and intercultural relations across the campus. One of three Associate
Vice Chancellors reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the individual
collaborates on strategic planning, setting annual work priorities, and the formulation of
policy.
Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities include student contact and interaction on relevant
issues, recruitment and retention of diverse staff and students, review and enforcement
of search policies and procedures for academic appointments, and research on salient
issues. The individual serves as a principal staff liaison, working with student and student
organizations on issues of inclusion and diversity; manages cultural programming units
and centers including La Casa Cultural Latina, Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural
Center, Asian American Cultural Center, Native American House, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and
Transgender Resources Center, Women’s Resources Center, and Diversity and Social Justice
Education programs; engages in strategic initiatives with regard to the coordination and
implementation of multicultural programs.
Additional responsibilities include: work with the Office of the Provost and other offices
on campus to determine the status of student success and retention, and to improve the
retention of students of color; represent Student Affairs with various community based
agencies, organizations and activities; review enrollment information and other relevant
reports to ascertain changes in the demographic characteristics of the student population;
study the implications of these changes for programs and services, advise the Vice
Chancellor, and recommend new directions for Student Affairs and the campus.
Qualifications: Requirements include a Master’s degree plus at least eight years of related
experience in organizing and managing multicultural issues and relationships in higher
education. The candidate must possess excellent communication skills, programmatic
experience, and knowledge of current issues in higher education, particularly related to
intercultural relations and student affairs. Prior experience in supervising full-time staff and
budget management is a must.
Individual must be able to think critically, analytically, and strategically to address emerging
trends and issues in higher education while meeting student interests and needs and involving
other departments and individuals on and off campus when appropriate. The successful
candidate must also possess strong collaborative skills and demonstrated excellence in
creating learning environments that value diversity, in and out of the classroom.
Appointment Status: This is a 12-month, full-time Academic Professional position.
Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience and includes an excellent benefits package.
