The University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications and nominations for the position of
Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS). We seek an outstanding leader to help
direct the next stage of the College’s development. The CNHS is comprised of two departments:
Nursing and Exercise and Health Sciences. The College, which has been growing in size and stature,
has an enrollment of more than 2,000 students, and offers academic programs at the baccalaureate,
master’s, and doctoral levels. CNHS faculty have impressive academic and research expertise in
areas such as nursing science, exercise and health science, health disparities, youth fitness, health
policy, and oncology care. A leader in the use of technological and other innovations in
professional practice, the College is also associated with more than 200 health care and fitness
organizations, which offer our students internships and research, clinical, and other experiences.
The Dean is the College’s Chief Administrative Officer and reports directly to the Provost and
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. He/she is expected to promote a culture of excellence
in all areas of the College’s activities; help CNHS to take advantage of UMass Boston’s rich
interdisciplinary atmosphere, in large measure defined by growing intercollegiate collaboration;
and foster an environment conducive to successful teaching, research, service, and practice.
Responsibilities include faculty recruiting and development, overseeing program evaluations,
forging strong collaborative relationships with other colleges and with external constituencies,
developing and monitoring budgets, and advancing and nurturing internationalization.
Candidates should have an earned doctorate in nursing, exercise and health sciences, or
related field; a portfolio of research publications; a record of innovative and successful
leadership; experience in generating and overseeing funded research; an excellent record
of teaching and curriculum development in graduate and/or undergraduate education;
a strong commitment to diversity and shared governance; and evidence of being or
becoming a thought leader in the area of health. A record of achievement that would
support an appointment with tenure is expected.
