The Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion
University (ODU) in Norfolk, VA invites applications for the position
of Department Chair, Engineering Management and Systems
Engineering (EMSE), to begin in January 2013 or July 2013.
ODU was named a “Great College to Work For” by the Chronicle of
Higher Education in 2011. It is located in a vibrant metropolitan area,
where recreation, cultural activities, educational offerings, and
business districts are all close by. The ODU community enjoys a
variety of indoor and outdoor sports facilities, a flourishing art scene,
prestigious museums, historic sites, charming neighborhoods,
exceptional restaurants, and sandy beaches. The proximity of the
campus to NASA Langley Research Center, Norfolk Naval Station,
Department of Energy's Jefferson Laboratories, Virginia Modeling

Norfolk International Terminals, major shipbuilding industries, and a
variety of other commercial enterprises, presents excellent research,
consulting and service opportunities to ODU faculty.
EMSE, a three-time recipient of the ASEM Founder’s Award for
“Excellence in Academic Leadership,” has 14 full-time faculty
members and over 250 graduate students. The research expenditures in
2011 fiscal year exceeded $2 million dollars. EMSE offers programs
leading to doctoral and masters degrees in Engineering Management
and Systems Engineering as well as an undergraduate minor in
Engineering Management. The Department is recognized by IEEE for
offering top-ranked graduate programs and is considered one of the top
five departments of its kind nationwide. EMSE is also recognized for
conferring the largest number of graduate degrees in the United States.
In addition to the traditional degree programs, EMSE offers an in-demand and progressive distance-learning program that can reach any
eligible student who has a computer and a high-speed Internet
connection. Our diverse student body hails from over 30 countries and
wide range of backgrounds. The Department and the faculty offices are
scheduled to move into a brand-new signature facility in 2014.
We are seeking a Department Chair with the vision, energy, scholarly
credentials and leadership skills to guide the department on its quest for
even greater levels of teaching and learning, research and contributions
to our communities. The successful candidate must have a track record
of successful leadership and must possess the interpersonal and
communication skills to maintain the department’s collegial
atmosphere. An earned doctorate in engineering management and/or
systems engineering or in a closely related discipline, a distinguished
record in: research and dedication to teaching and academic leadership
are required. In addition, candidates must have credentials meriting
appointment to the rank of full professor with tenure.
As a member of the College's leadership team, the Chair's duties will
include administrative responsibilities, such as departmental planning
and budgeting, staffing and supervision; departmental representation
and advice to the Batten College of Engineering and Technology and
to the academic and industrial community; as well as leadership with
respect to the evolution of the department’s academic curriculum,
degree programs and research.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONIC AND INFORMATION ENGINEERING Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor / Research Assistant Professor in Circuit Design, Communications and Optoelectronic Devices (four posts) [Appointment period: tenable from September 2012] Since its inception in 1974, the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering (EIE) has enjoyed a distinguished history of providing outstanding engineering education and conducting high impact research. Major esearch endeavours within the Department are conducted within four research groups, viz. communications, applied nonlinear circuits and systems, multimedia signal processing and thin film optoelectronics. The Department has extensive resources to support a wide variety of teaching activities and research interests. Appointees at Professor/Associate Professor level will be expected to have excellent teaching and publication records and to provide leadership in research, programme/curriculum development, administration, etc. Those who have demonstrated potential in making significant contributions to emerging technologies will also be considered. Applicants should: (a) have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline; (b) have the relevant postdoctoral research experience (as supported by evidence of publication record, research projects and outputs, or strong potential for publishing in top-tier refereed journals) and relevant teaching experience; (c) be able to demonstrate evidence of effective classroom teaching skills; and (d) have excellent communication skills (the medium of instruction is English). Nazarbayev University was opened in July 2010 in Astana with the aim
of being the leading university in Kazakhstan, the wider Central Asian
region and beyond. The University has a unique vision to work in
partnership with a number of the world’s most outstanding universities
to introduce a new approach to university education and research in
Kazakhstan. All teaching and business at Nazarbayev University is
carried out in English.
The Nazarbayev University School of Engineering, in partnership with
University College London, opened its doors on the 31st August 2011
with its first entry cohort of 140 students who had successfully completed
the university’s one year Foundation Programme. The School is currently
offering Bachelor degree programmes in Chemical Engineering, Civil
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Master
of Science programmes will be introduced from 2014. The School also
has its own research programme, in partnership, where appropriate, with
the university’s research centres in energy and life sciences.
The School is seeking to appoint further faculty at a number of levels
to continue its growth and development. This represents the fourth
round of recruitment for the School. Successful candidates will
possess a doctorate, or an equivalent higher academic degree (such
as the Kandidat Nauk/Candidate of Science), in a relevant discipline
area. They will also be active researchers with, or with the potential to
achieve, an internationally recognized track record of research.
