In 2009, Ron Shriver left a
promising military career
and became the first in his
family to go to college. At
McDaniel College, near
where he grew up, he
has excelled, often rising
before dawn at his parents’
farmhouse, at left, to study
before his children wake.
Mr. Shriver, shown at left
with the college’s certifying
official for veterans
benefits, Rose Blizzard, was
scheduled to graduate with
honors on May 19. His wife,
Jennifer, also a veteran,
graduated last year. “I could
never say enough about the
opportunities that McDaniel
has given me and my wife,”
he says.
